New Arrivals Fund

Background and Overview

Established through the Oregon Immigrant and Refugee Funders Collaborative—with contributions from the Collins Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, Northwest Area Foundation, and Seeding Justice—New Arrivals is a pooled fund of nearly $1 million.

The Fund’s purpose is to resource community-based organizations (CBOs) that support the unmet needs of new arrivals to Oregon to provide them with short- and long-term wraparound services, such as shelter and case management.

For this fund, new arrivals were defined as non-US citizens and their families who:

  • are seeking asylum;
  • have been residing in Oregon for five years or less
  • need support to rebuild I’m their lives and ensure their safety; and
  • are currently not receiving services or support through federally- or state-funded programs.

The New Arrivals Fund’s grant making approach was the product of a collaborative and community-led effort, with steering committee members—folks working at the front lines of immigration issues—bringing their ideas, expertise, and lived experience to the table, and Seeding Justice contributing its capacity as convener and facilitator.

The steering committee members were Alaide Vilchis Ibarra, co-executive director of Together Lab; Cameron Coval, director of sustainability at Pueblo Unido; Isa Peña, director of policy and advocacy at Innovation Law Lab; Peter Newbegin, executive director of Pacific Refugee Support Group; and Toc Soneoulay-Gillespie at CARE Oregon.
